UNC Children’s Hospital Newborn Critical Care Unit

Chapel Hill, NC

UNC Children’s Hospital is ranked as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” by US News and World Report, making it the only Top 10 children’s hospital in North Carolina.

With this in mind, MHAworks was pleased to have the opportunity to design and renovate the south wing of the 4th floor newborn critical care unit. We converted an existing administration space into a 10 Bassinet Level 4 Newborn Critical Care Pod. Each bassinet has custom built casework to provide separation between the other bassinets while adding storage space for supplies and patient items as well as trash receptacles accessed by foot pedals. Custom lockers are provided at each bassinet with magnetic white boards. A wedge style headwall has been provided to allow for easier access to med gas and electrical outlets. A centrally located custom nurse station provides visual observation of each bassinet. The project also created a new Lactation Room, Parent Sleep Room, Nutrition and Medication Room.

“The architect listened to what we needed in the design meeting for space and everything we had asked for was incorporated.”— Leslie Nelson, Parent Co-chair of the design committee

“The new unit shines as an example of the expanded access to this type of care for infants struggling with the most complicated illnesses.” — Alan Stiles, Physician-in-Chief for the Children’s Hospital
