MHAworks completed the assessment and renovation to two historic mills: Elliott Knitting Mill and Lyerly Full-Fashioned Mill. Located beside each other, the goal was to restore each structure to create a unified campus of new office buildings for the area. Both structures were abandoned textile mills built in the 1930s that were comprised of several smaller buildings full of hazardous materials and building issues.
Our first task was to survey the buildings, assess existing conditions, identify deficiencies and propose solutions to restore the structures and upgrade systems for the future office use.
One of the challenges for this project was the abatement of hazardous materials, salvaging as much of the structure and historical finishes as appropriate for the office use. The building and site were brought up to ADA compliance.
The property was designated a local historic landmark by the City of Hickory in 2007 and received the 2016 North Carolina Main Street Award of Merit for Best Historic Rehabilitation.
